Caring for Pull Handles

Pull handles can be used on cabinet doors, interior doors and other pieces of in-house furniture like dressers. Pull handles come in many different styles and designs and are made of many different materials. Pulls can be used as a focal point for decorating styles and finishes. However, pull handles can have both an aesthetic and a functional purpose. Most pull handles, after years of use, get worn out and dull and are no longer aesthetic. Changing or revamping your pull handles in your home décor is an easy yet subtle makeover project. This gives your kitchen, bathroom or furniture a new and fresh look. This is especially true if you replace your old pull handles with new decorative pull handles that can act as a statement of your decorating style. You can also simply just clean your pull handles to give them new life. Pull handles lifespan can also be shorted by damage incurred during installation, therefore, follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.

Improper installation can cut short the life of your drawer pull handles. Most pull handles require two screws for their installation. When switching out pull handles take the old one with you to the store to ensure that you purchase a pull that has identical screw placement. When installing drawer pull handles, install one pull handle on a drawer that is less than 18 inches wide. If your drawer is wider than 18 inches install two pull handles. This will minimize the strain on the drawer pull and the drawer effectively extending its life. When installing the pull handles avoid using an electric drill. The drill may apply too much torque and stress the handle or drawer causing it to crack or break. If the screw holes are worn consider filing them before installing new pulls.

A simple occasional cleaning can extend the life of your pull handles. Take time to clean all your pull handles; from you cabinet door pull handles to your door pull handles. This will prolong their life. Some factory warranties on pull handles cover only normal wear so take good care of your handles. The pull handles can be cleaned regularly with a moist cloth. Avoid abrasive and harsh cleaners that may damage the finish. For Brass pull handles use Brasso occasionally to bring back the shine. Special care should be taken on bathroom and kitchen pulls, as these are usually the most used.

f you are on a limited budget and can not afford to change out all your pull handles at one time you can replace a few at a time. The down side to this is that you may not be able to establish consistency in all your pulls. It is best to purchase handles as they go on sale and ensure that they are from the same manufacturer to remain consistent with the product. By installing your pull handles carefully, following the manufacturers instructions, and also by proper care you can extend the life of your pull handles. This is a task that is normally overlooked by most home owners. This maintenance can save you money in the long run.
